What is ASSITEJ?

Founded in 1965 as an international collaboration of professionals involved in theatre for children and young people, ASSITEJ, the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People operates globally in 83 national centres spread across the globe. The term ASSITEJ is a derivation of Association Internationale du Théâtre de l’Enfance et la Jeunesse in French. Yvette Hardie is the current president of ASSITEJ.

ASSITEJ Asia Meeting - August,2016

ASSITEJ Sri Lanka is pleased to announce that we will host the annual regional assembly of the Asian National Centres, the ASSITEJ Asia Meeting in Colombo 2016. The meeting is scheduled from 18th to 20th August 2016 in Colombo, Sri Lanka under the theme "Integrated Living through Theatre”. ASSITEJ Sri Lanka and Somalatha Subasinghe Play House are jointly organizing a three-day theatre festival for children and youth in parallel to ASSITEJ Asia Meeting. We sincerely hope that the ASSITEJ Asia meeting and the three day theatre festival will be an event that everyone will benefit from and remember.

Theatre festival for Children and Youth - August, 2016

Somalatha Subasinghe Play House (SSPH) presents a three-day theatre festival for children at Lionel Wendt theatre in concurrence with Assitej Asia Meeting 2016. At the festival theatre goers will have the opportunity to watch three very popular plays of SSPH, පුන්චි අපිට දැන් තේරෙයි (We Know It Now), තොප්පි වෙළෙන්දා (The Hat Seller) and විකෘති (Distortion). The latest production of SSPH, දු‍ටු තැන අල්ලනු (Wanted), directed by Kaushalya Fernando will be performed on the last day of the festival. දු‍ටු තැන අල්ලනු is in competition at the National Drama Festival 2016.

Creative Activities for Children Program - June,2016

The prime objective of the programme is to develop child’s mental and physical aspects and to enhance artistic taste, cheerfulness and playful sense of the child through aesthetic experiences.

"Dutu Thena Allanu - A Play by Kaushalya"

The play "Dutu Thena Allanu" by Kaushalya Fernando is based on “Opera Wonyosi“, written by Nobel laurate Wole Soyinka, a Nigerian playwright and poet.

ASSITEJ Sri Lanka

ASSITEJ Sri Lanka functions as a voluntary organization attached to Lanka Children’s and Youth Theatre Foundation (LCYTF). ASSITJ Sri Lanka was established in 1981 by a legendary playwright and actress in Sri Lanka, Somalatha Subasinghe. ASSITEJ Sri Lanka aims to endorse and further quality theatre for children and youth in Sri Lanka. We function as a networking platform for Sri Lankan artists who are involved in theater for children and youth as well as a producer of theatre for children and Youth and a training centre. Our mandate is to create connections among the theatremakers of Sri Lanka and that of the world. Access to and awareness of theatre in addition to ‘the right of every child for art education’, are the causes we work to achieve.

ASSITEJ Next Generation Programmes

ASSITEJ Next Generation Programmes are designed by ASSITEJ International to unite and empower the young and emerging artists.

Formed in order to link the professional dramatists across the world, The Next Generation Network is a platform that operates bringing those artists together. Enabling international exchanges which aims to grant opportunities and reinforce collaboration is one of the main objectives of the program.
